Handover Workshop

The handover entails an eight-day workshop at the prison, where the inmate dog trainer and the dog training team support the individual pairing of the dogs with their Veteran.

The handover takes place in a considered, personalised and holistically supported manner - allowing the Veteran time to build confidence and skills, gradually becoming the handler of the dog.

The handover process begins with learning theory and basic practice within the prison setting, and progresses to real life experiences within the local community - in local parks, shopping centres and cafes.

The dogs are an acknowledged and appreciated part of the social fabric of the local community in Bathurst, and the public rally behind the program, and support the program's role in improving the lives of our Veterans.

The handover process culminates in the graduation of the dog from the program, and a ceremony to acknowledge the handover from the inmate handler to their Veteran - ready to help support their Veteran’s mental and physical health needs and to start improving their lives. One paw at a time.
